Leather & Wood
Pienaar’s sculptures are predominantly made with leather, wood, and steel in some instances, and focus on an ever-growing social and political sphere where gender-based violence is ignored and even encouraged in some instances. It is also based on continued personal experiences of alienation, manipulation and condescension based merely on the fact that women are women. Pienaar expresses how she cannot help but wonder what it means to be a woman, which is what she set out to do in these works.
These sculptures bear the markings of violence, suffocation, animalisation and demonisation thrust upon women as we navigate our way in the world, morphing our bodies and our beings so as not to be shunned or labelled ‘traitor’ or fall victim to our own bodily presences.
